Powder to the people
Shooting a spoof documentary with real members of the public calls for a camera that’s small enough to get right in on the action. The new JVC GY-HM100 is put through its paces on a film featuring wannabe party organiser, Kevin Powder, as he heads to L.A. to set up a club night.
One Night In Powder is a comedy film project, developed by Tellyjuice
Productions. The idea was based on a 35-minute film created by Jason Attar, which won the Guardian Laptop Movie award. It features English rock ’n’ roll wannabe, Kevin Powder, who
has a dream of creating a ‘Studio 54’-style club in Los Angeles, using members of the public to help make his dream a reality.
The film is a documentary spoof, shot with real members of the public on the fly, and therefore the choice of camera was critical. The dilemma was how to shoot a feature film on digital video, using a camera that's great quality yet small enough to be unobtrusive (shoot and run). The result has to be good enough to print to 35mm. A tall order? This is where the JVC GY-HM100 comes in.
Jason Attar, the director and actor behind Kevin Power, explains, “The camera is incredibly light and small and, in addition, the handle and boom mic can be detached, creating an
even smaller camera. We liked the fact that the camera has a great workflow with Apple Final Cut Pro, as we need to edit the dailies using FCP on location to check
that the semi-improvised nature of the story stays on track.”
The JVC GY-HM100 allows files to be dragged and dropped from the SDHC cards straight into the editor, saving valuable conversion time.
“Because SDHC cards are common and relatively cheap, you can shoot to your heart’s content, and filmcontinuously via the camera’s card slots. The camera has been pitched to the pro market at a decent price, making it ideal for a project that will demand rinsing every ounce out of the gear," Jason continues. "So far, it has come up trumps. Shooting test scenes on London’s streets has indicated that the camera, together with the film, will deliver the goods.”
